You might be surprised to learn that the best selling car in the UK for 2020 wasn't the Ford Fiesta or Focus as you might think but in fact it was the Mercedes A-class!

Our car is the plug in hybrid A250e AMG Line Premium. Like virtually all PHEVs the A250e’s modus operandi is to use up all its battery power before calling on the engine. 

It defaults to Electric mode when you switch it on, but you can choose to save some charge for later or let the car manage the two power sources as it sees fit.  The A-Class plug-in claims 44 miles and will do an honest 38 miles without calling upon its internal combustion engine. 

That’s very good and even with a totally depleted battery the engine will shut down when you take your foot off the gas, saving yet more fuel. 

It only take a few hours to recharge the battery from a wall box or you can use the 3 pin wall charger as an alternative. The transition between electric- and petrol-power is smooth and effortless delivering up to 215bhp making the car very quick off the mark. We think this is a great little car that will satisfy most of your daily driving in electric mode, while offering the versatility if you take the car off island on longer journeys.
